inside my sketchbook... there's some chocolate

This piece all started with a hershey's kiss. Don't know why but the silver and brown wrapping appealed to me. And I decided to transform it into a dress. Then the whole theme of Easter and chocolate came to mind.... and translated into this sketch. Hope you like it ! Chocolate is just an eternal source of inspiration to me !

miss scarab gets colored...work in progress

I have been quite busy this week. I have been coloring Miss Scarab. For me, color is the hardest part. Concept and sketching are super easy but once I have to put color in... I start to get nervous. There are so many options, color, texture, medium, digital or traditional... that I get lost in all the choices. So coloring for me, takes time.
that's why I have been quite silent this week. I have been coloring and here is where I am at. I really enjoy seeing the creative process of other artist, so here is a peak at mine.
The background is pretty much done. Next step... Miss Scarab.
Hope you like it!

miss scarab gets colored...in a near future

I don't know if you remember my series on Madam Scarab. Well this character has been my test image for everything. Need to test acetone transfer... well let's print Madam Scarab. And Madam scarab has been used and reused for my various not so serious color tests. But this time... it is serious. So this is the preliminary sketch for the coloring of Madam scarab. (now miss scarab). I still feel like I need to rework the title letters but the rest seem pretty satisfactory to me.
This little character is based on a children's tale. ( Mademoiselle Scarabée by Pierre Gripari) and now that I see this sketch, it really feels to me like the cover of a childrens book... so maybe I'll illustrate to whole book ? Could be fun !
I'll keep you posted on my coloring process..

I have been darwing afro girls everywhere and this is the end result. My little afro girl: Miss Disco Pierrot. In the font, you can clearly see the inspiration Eduardo Recife Handmade font had on me. ( You can learn more about Eduardo Recife in this previous blog) Hope you like it !

I also wanted to mention that I will be participating in 2 sketchbooks exchange. I am really excited about this !! And I will keep you posted on all the updates.

I have found this great celestial maps on internet. And I wanted to share the link with you. This site has a lot of very high rez images. They are mostly maps of various sources. Since I'm doing the Zodiac series, I was mostly interested in the celestial map. Maybe I'll introduce some pieces to these images in color version. Could look interesting ?
Hope it helps!

sketch book Marie-antoinette

So here is another excerpt form my sketchbook. I just wanted to have fun with my new different pencils. I started doing the pattern in the hair... not knowing it was going to become hair... and then when all was done I had this little Marie-Antoinette. It's a big mix of things: lace, fonts, pattern & anatomical images but I find it really cute. Well hope you like this one !

DIY exposure unit

So in my post DIY screen printing, I had mentionned that i was going to built my own version of the weekly print's exposure unit. But since I not very good with building things, I took a ikea table leg ( vika artur) and screwed two 500 w lamps on it. The ikea table leg was on special at $10 I think and the lamps cost around $15 each ( found them at the rona for all you quebecers out there, a hardware store). The length between my screen and the lamps is 24 inch. So it fit pretty much the design of the weekly print. I have placed my coated screen on the tray, under it there's a foam cover with black paper, over it there is the transparency and a cheap frame glass ( $20 at canadian tire, this was more expensive but i wanted the frame for something else) For now, I only did a time test. And with a white mesh small screen cover with speedball emulsion, it takes 5 min to burn my screen. So I pretty happy about my end result. Hope it helps !

inspiration: Eduardo Recife

Here si another of my great inspiration. His name is Eduardo Recife and he is from Brazil. ( I am wondering if there is a collage movement in Brazil because I have discover a lot of great collage artist form that part of the world) He is an illustrator, typographer and graphic designer and his work is amazing !! Lots of digital collages but with a very modern and trendy twist. You can check his personal work here and make sure to take a look at his typefaces. I am in complete admiration for the font HandMade. Eduardo Recife has also a commercial portfolio which features work for Panic at the Disco and also great collage videos. I have been attempting to learn After Effects and his video were great inspiration on what we can achieve with this program. But what a greatly admire about Eduardo Recife is that he has achieve a great balance between his commercial and personal work. Both type of work are super creative and interresting and showcase well his personal style. And that is a thing I wish all creative can accomplish... no more sells out.
